Learn French in 5 Easy Steps
We are lucky enough to have access to thousands of language learning resources both online and in person. Perhaps it has never been so easy to learn French.
However, having so much choice can often be a curse rather than a blessing. Many learners find themselves feeling confused and lost about how to best approach their French learning.
Where do I begin? Which resources shall I use? What is my preferred learning style?
Sometimes, keeping things simple is the best approach. Language learning doesn’t have to be long, hard and tedious. If you keep your attention focussed on the right materials, you can speed up the process.
In today’s post, we are sharing 5 easy-to-follow steps on how to learn French without having to get lost in the millions of language learning tools out there. Let’s take a look:
1. Don’t Overwhelm Yourself With Too Many Online Resources
With so many apps and so many tools available, where do you begin?
Online learning tools are great, but we recommend keeping things simple.
For example, why not look into different French podcasts and choose 1 or 2 you will listen to regularly. Podcast Français Facile tends to be popular amongst learners.
If you are into using apps, we have a good guide here on where to get started. Have a browse of the various apps and then choose one that suits your learning style. Everyone will have a different preference. Apps that use flashcards tend to be great for memorizing new words.
Remember, simplicity is key. Sometimes too much information is not a good thing. You don’t need to use every single podcast or app!
2. Make Sure To Learn the Foundations of the French Language
This is probably the least fun part of learning French, yet it is completely necessary. You will need to learn the foundations of the French language. This means :
the tenses
the conjugations
general vocabulary
and all the different grammar rules.
From there you will be able to start constructing phrases in French.
A basic tool for French learning is of course a good French dictionary, so you may want to invest in one. I also recommend buying a Bescherelle- these are fantastic little books for helping you to memorize verb structures and endings.
There are some apps that focus on grammar too.
3. Put What You Have Learnt Into Practice
Learning and memorizing French grammar rules and vocabulary is of course essential, but none of this will actually be useful if you don’t put what you have learnt into practice.
I mean the whole point of learning a language is to speak it fluently right?
There are two great ways to put your French to test:
the first one is to have some lessons with a private tutor. A tutor can help you become more confident in speaking French and will keep you motivated throughout your journey.
The second way is to immerse yourself in a country where the language is spoken. You could do this by visiting a French speaking country or even making a move there.
If you really put yourself out there:
ordering food at restaurants
joining sports or language classes
meeting new French peopl
Your speaking skills will progress very rapidly.
4. Learn to Pronounce Correctly Right From the Beginning
Pronouncing French words incorrectly is one of the most common language problems.
Part of the issue is that learning French out of textbooks does not allow you to hear how the words should be pronounced correctly. Hence, the emphasis on listening to French via podcasts, and movies etc.
Working with a one-to-one tutor is also useful because they can point out words you are pronouncing incorrectly, and hearing them speak will help your brain to memorize the correct way of pronouncing words.
Also remember: Repetition is key.
5. Work on Your French On a Regular Basis
Although this point seems pretty obvious, this is something many of us forget to actually do! You need to work on your French on a regular basis, so that you keep improving your language skills.
We recommend that you find a designated time daily for your French learning (if your schedule allows this).
Otherwise, definitely dedicate a few times a week to your studies.
The more often you practice, the quicker you will reach your fluency goals.
