5 ways to Use ChatGPT To You Learn French

Have you ever heard of ChatGPT? It is an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot that people are now using for many different things, even as a tool to improve their language skills. You’re probably asking yourself ‘Can I use ChatGPT to learn French?’ The answer is yes! (to an extent). Let’s take a look at 5 ways to use ChatGPT to learn French.

Technology has made learning a new language much easier. ChatGPT is beneficial because you feel as though you are actually talking to a person in French (via chat), when actually you are just chatting to artificial intelligence. Weird, right? There are many ways you can use ChatGPT to learn some French. You can ask it a variety of questions and it will respond to you to the best of its ability.

However, there are a few things to note first. ChatGPT is NOT a substitute for a teacher or a tutor. It can aid you in your French learning but it isn’t the only thing you should rely on. You have to remember that since you are talking to a machine, not everything it will teach you is accurate or correct.

How can I learn French with ChatGPT?

1- A great way to practice your writing skills

Essentially, by using ChatGPT, you are developing your writing skills. You will be practicing forming sentences in French, formulating questions and learning new vocabulary. For example, you can type in “Can we have a conversation in French about movies?” and ChatGPT will begin a conversation with you about films.

Note: you can type in either French or English. Try to be as accurate as possible in asking what you want help with- remember you are talking to a machine.

Of course, you will benefit more if you are writing in French, which is why ChatGPT is probably better suited for those at an intermediate to advanced level. However if you are a beginner, you can type in English and ask for responses in French (so that you can still practice reading in French).

2- You can ask for vocabulary related to a certain topic

ChatGPT can be beneficial for learning some new French vocabulary. You can ask it to teach you vocabulary related to a certain topic. Example: I have typed in ‘give me useful phrases for when on holiday, please’. This is the response I received.

You can also ask specific questions like “When do I use the imperfect tense in French?” or “What is the difference between the verbs savoir and connaître”. It will give you a response (but again the answers are NOT always 100% correct- this is not a complete substitute for a teacher/tutor).

3. Practice reading and comprehension skills

ChatGPT can be used to improve your French reading and comprehension skills. Let’s imagine you ask for a dialogue in French with lots of slang terms:

You can also ask for a text including plenty of examples of the subjunctive, or something you tend to struggle with regarding French grammar. The options are limitless here!

 4.Use it to correct your phrases in french

Sometimes you don’t have access to a tutor/ teacher but you want to know if what you have written in French is correct. ChatGPT can help you out in this scenario. All you have to do is type “Corrige ma phrase: …(insert phrase)…” It will then correct your sentence to the best of its ability (and hopefully do it correctly!!)

5. You can ask it to create a multiple choice quiz for you

To make things a bit more creative and fun, ChatGPT can generate a multiple choice quiz for you about French topics. Let’s say you want to test yourself on the conditional tense, or on conjugating verbs that end in -re in the present tense. You just have to put in the command and it will come up with multiple choice questions.

You can also use ChatGPT to translate into French. All in all, there are hundreds of different ways you can use ChatGPT to learn French, but I would be here all day listing them! That’s why I encourage you to explore it yourself and see how you prefer to learn with it. Do remember that it is only a machine and shouldn’t act as a total replacement for textbooks and learning with a teacher/ tutor.
