When you first start your French learning journey, understanding the language at its natural spoken pace can seem pretty terrifying... Not to worry though! Listening to French podcasts is an effective and worthwhile way to improve your language skills.

Today’s post will provide you with a useful guide on some of our favourite podcasts to help you learn French; no matter whether you are just starting your language journey (a beginner), or whether you are quite an advanced learner. There is something on this list for everyone!

Why Should I Use Podcast ?

I think we can all agree that listening is an essential part of becoming fluent in French. Wouldn’t it be a nightmare if you were able to read an entire book in French but couldn’t understand a conversation with a native speaker?

One of the biggest advantages of podcasts is that you can listen to them anywhere: on the way to work, whilst cooking, or before bed. Podcasts are (thankfully) usually free, and you can listen to them on phone apps or on laptops.

Podcasts help you to learn the French that real French speakers use (something which you can’t get from textbooks).  They provide learners with new vocabulary, grammatical help and you can learn about French culture at the same time.

It’s important to remember that you need to listen to podcasts regularly to get the best results. I would aim for 30 minutes a day, although 10 minutes is better than nothing!

1. Podcasts for Beginners

If you are just starting your French learning journey, Coffee Break French is probably a good place to start. This podcast offers four different ability levels and is free. If you like a more ‘relaxed’ approach to learning then this one is probably for you. The podcasts are fun as the speakers (Mark- the teacher & Ana- the student) discuss French in a casual way.

There is also JeFrench which really focuses on basic vocabulary and common expressions (perfect for when taking a little trip to France). They break down each part of the conversation for you which is very helpful.

2. Podcasts for Intermediate Learners

For intermediate learners, One Thing in a French Day is a favourite amongst many. This podcast is hosted by a Parisian lady called Laetitia, who speaks at a normal speed (yay!). Laetitia uploads a podcast every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and the topics vary as she discusses an aspect of her daily life in France. This could be anything such as cultural events, French history or recipes.

Another choice is Français authentique. This is a fantastic podcast where a man named Johan helps to explain french common expressions, jokes and improve your pronunciation. Each 10 minute audio is fun and laid back as the host is very likeable.

Another option: News In Slow French: (Keeps you up to date with the news)

3. Podcasts for Advanced Learners

If your French is already at a good level, you can try out the Sur La Route podcast from France Culture. This is like going on a road trip (aurally) as each episode focuses on a different region of France. You will be learning about French culture as well as improving your listening skills.

For those who are interested in deep, sensitive, political and environmental issues, Grand Reportage is the podcast for you. This podcast is like listening to the news and covers serious issues like migration, politics and gender inequality. You will pick up much more advanced vocabulary with this podcast.

Another option: Villes-Mondes (for all travel lovers)
